SEO Best Practices in Your CMS System

While Search Engine Optimization (SEO) remains one of the most important digital marketing strategies, its best practices have changed and evolved over the years as search engines like Google have made changes to their algorithms.

What is SEO exactly? Simply put, it is the way a single page of content (or an entire website) is optimized to achieve a higher ranking in search engines. Proper optimization makes it easier for search engines to determine what your content is about and how relevant it is to searches people plug into those engines.

As you prepare a new blog post or web page in your CMS (Sitefinity, C1 CMS, WordPress, etc.), here are a few best practices to keep in mind:

  • Research your keywords:  Before you can actually optimize your content, you need to make sure you are using the proper keywords for each situation. Research your keywords to get an idea of how they perform for you before committing to them in your content.
  • Create SEO-friendly titles:  Every page on your site should have a unique and descriptive page title, using important keywords and the name of your brand. It’s also important to incorporate Headings throughout your page content, making the content easier to read and giving you some SEO rewards. For example, every page should have an H1 tag (only one per page), followed by multiple H2, H3, and H4 tags.
  • SEO-friendly URLs:  Make sure you change the default URL structure for pages in your CMS from something generic and difficult to read, to something short and sweet that includes primary keywords. This will help your SEO much more than having a randomly generated number, or just the date of the post as the URL.
  • Meta description:  The meta description is the short description of the content that appears in the search engine. A brief description that includes your target keyword and clearly identifies what the content is about with some sort of “hook” to get people to click is the best way to draw search engine attention.
  • High-quality content:  Google also cares greatly about the quality of the content you produce. If your content is spammy, overly packed with keywords or does not meet certain quality metrics, it will be punished in search rankings.
  • Mobile friendly:  Make sure you have elected to use a mobile-friendly design. Responsive designs are making it easier than ever to use the same theme across a variety of platforms.
  • Optimize images:  Images that take too long to load will hurt your search engine rankings, so make sure they are optimized for web.
